{"id":2495,"date":"2024-08-21T05:35:43","date_gmt":"2024-08-21T10:35:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/betterstreetsmb.com\/bsmb\/?p=2495"},"modified":"2024-09-18T11:46:23","modified_gmt":"2024-09-18T16:46:23","slug":"miami-beach-residents-overwhelmingly-support-expanding-rapid-transit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/betterstreetsmb.com\/bsmb\/miami-beach-residents-overwhelmingly-support-expanding-rapid-transit\/","title":{"rendered":"Miami Beach Residents Overwhelmingly Support Expanding Rapid Transit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Results are in from August 20th&#8217;s Straw Ballot on expanding rapid transit, and Miami Beach residents voted in favor by a 4-1 margin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"739\" height=\"467\" src=\"https:\/\/betterstreetsmb.com\/bsmb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/results_2024_unofficial.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/betterstreetsmb.com\/bsmb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/results_2024_unofficial.png 739w, https:\/\/betterstreetsmb.com\/bsmb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/results_2024_unofficial-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 739px) 100vw, 739px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With 100% of the votes counted, <a href=\"https:\/\/enr.electionsfl.org\/DAD\/3616\/Summary\/\">unofficial results<\/a> show that 80.1% voted in support of expanding rapid mass transit, defined as Metrorail, passenger rail, and\/or Metromover, in the ballot question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"448\" height=\"460\" src=\"https:\/\/betterstreetsmb.com\/bsmb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/ballo-2024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/betterstreetsmb.com\/bsmb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/ballo-2024.png 448w, https:\/\/betterstreetsmb.com\/bsmb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/ballo-2024-292x300.png 292w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly 20 years ago, when this issue was last presented to voters, Miami Beach residents also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamidade.gov\/elections\/results\/ele110204\/cumu110204.pdf\">voted in favor<\/a> of expanding transit. This time, the margins are even wider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The overwhelming support should serve as a wakeup call to elected officials at City Hall. Earlier this year, the Miami Beach City Commission unanimously passed a <a href=\"https:\/\/betterstreetsmb.com\/bsmb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Resolution-2024-32918.pdf\">resolution<\/a> opposing the long-planned Baylink Metromover extension from downtown to South Beach via the MacArthur Causeway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main opposition came from board members of neighborhood associations in the South of Fifth and West Avenue neighborhoods. Yet, residents from these neighborhoods voted 77% in favor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, with over 9,000 votes cast, nearly 7,300, or just over 80% of residents, supported this measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By contrast, the Mayor received slightly under 5,500 votes when he was elected last November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/betterstreetsmb.com\/aug20\/precinct\/web\/index.html\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Stay tuned to Better Streets as we continue to analyze and provide commentary on this historic vote.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By a 4-to-1 margin, 80.1% of Miami Beach residents supported expanding rapid mass transit.
