Nearly 69% of impacted property owners have voted to maintain the Ocean Drive Pedestrian Promenade, surpassing the two-thirds majority required by Miami-Dade County for the temporary plaza to continue.
The vote represents a significant milestone in making the promenade permanent along north Ocean Drive, spanning two blocks between 13th Street and 14th Place. Despite opposition from some business owners and a brief challenge from Miami-Dade County in October 2023, the promenade has persisted, and along with other city commission-approved changes, has helped transform the iconic street into a safe and vibrant area welcoming to tourists and locals alike.
Since 2022, the entertainment district’s Ocean Drive, from 5th Street north to 14th Place, has featured a two-way protected bicycle lane along its eastern edge, replacing what was previously a northbound vehicle lane and parking. This balanced approach to street design – incorporating a protected bike lane while maintaining slow-speed vehicle access – has proven to be a successful model for the historic neighborhood.
The November 2024 vote received responses from 252 property owners, with 173 in favor of the current configuration. Miami-Dade County’s Department of Transportation and Public Works now has 30 days to review both the voting results and requested traffic operations and safety analysis.
